One of the most popular announcement from the Google I/O 2018 is a feature called Google Duplex. With Google Duplex, You can book reservations at restaurants, saloon and more via your Google Assistant. The Assistant will make an automated call to book your appointment and it will talk just like a human.
Google invited some of the top journalists to have a look at the feature at a restaurant in Mountain View California. As reported by The Verge, Now Google Assistant will tell the person that it is the Google Assistant and this call will be recorded.
For Example “I’m Google’s automated booking service, so I’ll record the call. Uh, can I book a table for Sunday the first?”. This was one of the most requested addition to the service and Google has delivered it. Google will also begin limited testing in the coming weeks.
As stated by Nick Fox, Google VP of Product and Design For Google Assistant, this limited testing include only a set of trusted users. The calls will be limited to the businesses that Google has partnered with only. So it will be a very closed testing as Google needs to be sure before giving it to a large audience.
The Google Duplex will be rolled out in phases meaning first it will be only available for calls about holiday hours, then restaurant reservations and finally Saloon appointments. As stated above, these are the only three things that Google has trained Duplex for as of now.
“Duplex can recognize that and end the call with something like “‘OK I’ll call back on an unrecorded line’ and then we have an operator just call back,” Fox says. So this if good that Google will respect your concern about privacy and will not record your call.
Google also says that it will protect restaurants from the Fake reservations and will limit the calls going to a restaurant via the Google Assistant. Journalists were given a lot of demos in which they can become the restaurant manager to test our the service.
According to the reports that it failed sometimes, which is good as it means that it was a genuine testing and there is a lot of scope of improvement. A lot of things which the people were concerned about has been acknowledged here and by the time Duplex is available to general public it will be great.
