Yesterday, Xiaomi launched its Redmi S2 smartphone as the Redmi Y2 in India. Earlier this year Xiaomi launched its one of the most anticipated smartphone in India called the Redmi Note 5, the smartphone was overshadowed by the Redmi Note 5 Pro at the launch and now Xiaomi’s own Y2 is giving it a tough competition.
Lately the design of all the Xiaomi smartphones, or smartphones in general has been the same and same goes for these two. Both the smartphone comes with a 18:9 aspect ratio display with thinner bezels but the dual rear camera setup on the Redmi Y2 looks more modern.
But the Remi Note 5 comes with a 5.99-inch full HD+ display where as we only have 5.99-inch HD+ display on the Redmi Y2. Both the smartphone comes with a rear placed fingerprint scanner and the popular face unlock feature.
Both Redmi Y2 and the Redmi Note 5 runs on the Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage. Both comes with a dedicated SD card slot too and runs on Android Oreo based MIUI 9. Both the Redmi smartphones will be updated to the MIUI 10 too.
So in terms of performance both of these are same and there is no difference at all. Redmi Note 5 comes with a massive 4,000mAh battery, whereas the Redmi Y2 comes with a 3,080mAh batterry. While Redmi Note 5 will be better at battery life, Redmi Y2 is also not behind as it comes with a HD+ display only.
This is the area where major difference lies. Xiaomi gave all the awesome camera updates to the Redmi Note 5 Pro and left Redmi Note 5 behind. As the Redmi Y2 is touted as a selfie smartphone, the 5-megapixel front-facing camera on the Redmi Note 5 is no where near the 16-megapixel front-camera on the Redmi Y2.
Same goes for the 12-megapixel rear camera on the Redmi Note 5 vs the dual camera 12+5 megapixel sensors on the Redmi Y2. While Xiaomi says that with its AI you can get great portrait shots with a single camera, they agreeed that portrait mode with a dual camera setup looks better.
Both the smartphones are priced at ₹9,999 for the 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage variant. The 4GB RAM variant on the Redmi Note 5 is priced at ₹11,999, where as the Redmi Y2 at ₹12,999. First of all if you need a better camera, Redmi Y2 is the way to go.
Also if you are on a tight budget and wants to buy the ₹9,999 variant, again go for the Redmi Y2. Only and Only if you need a full HD+ display, we can recommend you the Redmi Note 5 over the Redmi Y2. It is interesting to see, Xiaomi killing its own smartphone launched a few months back.
