One of the most popular messaging service of its time, Yahoo Messenger is finally shutting down on 17th July 2018. The messaging service was first introduced in 1998 and was very popular among the users, especially in India. The service lost its charm to Google Talk, Orkut and eventually Facebook.
Then with messaging services like iMessage and WhatsApp, Yahoo Messenger was nowhere near. Yahoo tried to revive the messaging platform by giving it a complete overhaul in 2015 and even updated its Android and iOS apps last year.
Yahoo messenger was focused for desktop customer with a dedicated Windows software but with the rise of social networks, smartphones and mobile apps, Yahoo Messenger lost. The users will have 6 months to download their data from the messenger.
After 17th July. Yahoo will re-direct messenger to its new group messaging service called Squirrel. The service is currently in beta and can only be accessed by applying for an Invite. The service will be open to public after 17th July and will be available on both iOS and Android.
Even in 2018 there are many loyal users of Yahoo Messengers, but finally its time to move on. Make sure you download your data if you have something important. We will try out the Squirrel app and will check if it is worth switching to instead of going to WhatsApp or iMessage from Yahoo Messenger.
