After just three years of launch, YouTube is shutting down its gaming website called YouTube Gaming. Google-owned video streaming platform launched YouTube Gaming to compete against popular game streaming platform twitch and now the service is being redirected to a separate section on the YouTube website.
“Today, we’re launching a new Gaming destination to give gamers a home on YouTube! You can find the new YouTube Gaming destination at youtube.com/gaming,” YouTube announced via a blog post. The company will also retire the YouTube gaming app by March 2019 and bring all of its features to the main YouTube app.
YouTube gaming was launched with the aim of providing a separate platform for gamers with some unique features like Super Chat, Channel Membership, Dark theme, and games pages for better discoverability. But due to the positive response by the community, YouTube has brought all of these features to the main YouTube app/website.
So even non-gaming creators have Super Chats, Channel memberships and dark mode across the YouTube platform. Now coming to this new section, at top of the YouTube gaming page you’ll see personalized gaming videos based on your watch history. Along with this, you will also see top videos and live streams from your current subscriptions.
There are now dedicated game pages for your favourite game on YouTube. For example, there will be a dedicated Fortnite page where you can find all the streams and videos about the game. This would also contain other games from the same publisher or developer. Just like YouTube India is promoting a small creator every week with its Creator on Rise campaign, YouTube gaming will also promote a gaming creator.
This is only for the US creators for now and YouTube will roll out the feature to more countries soon. “We have a strong and vibrant audience on the YouTube Gaming app, but the amount of gamers we are able to reach is far bigger on YouTube. After all, YouTube is where more than 200 million gamers come to engage with your favorite games and creators every day, watching over 50 billion hours of gaming content in the last 12 months alone,” YouTube on YouTube gaming app. Stay tuned to Sid Tech for latest tech news, deals, reviews and more.
